in our defense

a message from one of the members of BMAP or the Biology Majors Association of the Philippines read that people are saying ill things about biology students and the course it self.
since i had nothing better to do and since i simply cannot let this go i replied:
To state that BS-Biology is a futile and pointless course is to make a
declaration with
no grounds and of ill knowledge. As defense from these allegations, i would like
to
disprove the arguments which were mentioned.
First is the claim that one becomes old and financially poor when taking
this course.
BS-Biology, in its primary nature, is a course geared for medicine; which, may
unneedingly
be said, will lead you to a profession called "Doctor of Medicine"- a profession
which is
undisputedly stable and lucrative. Though there are fewer and fewer people
pursuing this
employment, it still does not take away the fact that being a doctor leads to a
very
luxurious life, or at least to a financially easy life. Furthermore, the other
professions
served by this course, like research in microbiology, parasitology, etc. may not
be popular
here in the philippines, but are certainly sought after in many countries, most
especially
the United States. Pharmacuetical companies are in great need of researchers for
these
people are the legs they stand on perse. Being a researcher may not be as
glamorous as
being a doctor, but it still pays well.
And with regards to the claim that there are no demands for graduates of
this course,
i must reitirate my statement in the previous paragraph, jobs open for biology
graduates
may not be as popular in the philippines, but they are very much in demand in
other
countries. Though the demand is not as glaring as in nursing and computer
science
graduates, the demand is still there and the supply levels of biology graduates
are much
less as compared to the afforementioned courses. So i close this paragraph with
the
question: in the law of supply and demand, which case will prove to be more
lucrative?
Finally, in the statement that BS-Biology graduates have no social
impact, i must say
to be the most ungrounded claim of them all. Biology is the study of life, it
entails
everything from the smallest creature to the entire system which our world
operates, it is
from this sphere of life does society operate. Biology is the key to
understanding our
world. Social issues quite commonly heard these days are issues on global
warming,
pollution, deforestation, pouching, etc. are all biological issues, most
understood by
BIOLOGY MAJORS. How are people going to explain the catastrophes in the recent
land
slides due to the great typhoons which ravaged the land? How are people going to
know
why pollution is detrimental to health? How cleaning the waterways will
eliminate bacteria?
and so on, all of these are topics covered in biology.
So now i ask what further evidence is needed to prove how important
BS-Biology is to
this society.

note:
I hope this will help shut those people up :)
